Ars Nova Workshop presents the return of renowned saxophonist and composer Tim Berne for a two-night residency featuring a pair of exploratory ensembles at Solar Myth on March 10 & 11.
Alto saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and label boss Tim Berne asserts a strong and singular musical personality that links his diverse and frequently absorbing works in an astonishing variety of styles, typically juxtaposing meticulously noted arrangements with free improvisation. His ever-unpredictable ensembles have featured a staggering array of leading-edge jazz voices, including Chris Speed, Jim Black, Michael Formanek, Craig Taborn, Marc Ducret, Bobby Previte, Bill Frisell, and many others. For this very special residency he’ll perform with two unique ensembles: Sun of Goldfinger, the sonically adventurous trio of Berne, guitar wizard David Torn, and drummer Ches Smith, joined by special guest New Orleans accordionist Aurora Nealand; and Bat Channel, a new quartet with guitarist Gregg Belisle-Chi, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Jeff Davis.
