Ars Nova Workshop presents the experimental saxophonist Steve Lehman and his Trio, joined by Mark Turner as they celebrate the 80th birthday year of Anthony Braxton at Solar Myth on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
Described as “one of the transforming figures of early 21st century jazz,” by The Guardian and as a “state-of-the-art musical thinker” by The New York Times, Steve Lehman is a composer and alto saxophonist who works across a broad spectrum of experimental musical idioms. He has performed and recorded with his own ensembles and with those led by Anthony Braxton, Vijay Iyer, George Lewis, Bennie Maupin, Jason Moran, Georgia-Anne Muldrow, Meshell Ndegeocello, Tyshawn Sorey, and High Priest of Antipop Consortium, among many others. Lehman’s pieces for large orchestra and chamber ensembles have been performed by the American Composers Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble, So Percussion, JACK Quartet, and the PRISM Saxophone Quartet. For this special performance, Lehman and his long-running trio with bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid will be joined by Mark Turner, renowned as one of the most influential saxophonists of his generation, to explore the repertoire of the iconic saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton in honor of his 80th birthday year.
