Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present the return of Sexmob, the irreverent quartet led by slide trumpet master Steven Bernstein. We’ll be celebrating the release of their new recording, The Hard Way (Corbett Vs. Dempsey), which was produced by Scotty Hard (De La Soul).
Steven Bernstein, who has worked with everyone from Lou Reed to Sam Rivers, formed Sexmob in 1996, with saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. The quartet remains his primary vehicle for exploring the slide trumpet, a rare instrument that he picked up in a Woodstock guitar shop back in 1977. Nearly three decades later, Sexmob continues to deconstruct familiar pop tunes with subversive impunity, with a repertoire ranging from James Bond themes to Fellini soundtracks, Prince to Duke Ellington to Professor Longhair – along with Bernstein’s own raucous originals.
