Ars Nova Workshop presents the gifted trumpeter Peter Evans, a master of extended technique , and his new quartet Being & Becoming, featuring master drummer Tyshawn Sorey, for a two-night residency at Solar Myth, December 6-7.
For 20 years NYC-based, trumpeter, composer, bandleader and educator Peter Evans has been pushing the boundaries of creative music in formats as divergent as solo trumpet improvisation, symphony orchestras, jazz ensembles, noise/electronic music, and through-composed works. He’s been the recipient of awards and commissions worldwide including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2022. Evans has worked with some of the leading figures in contemporary music, including John Zorn, Pauline Oliveros, Brian Ferneyhough, George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson, Craig Taborn, Ambrose Akinmusere, Weasel Walter, Dave Liebman, Ingrid Laubrock, and Jeff “Tain” Watts; and works with both the International Contemporary and Wet Ink Ensembles as a performer and composer.
His quartet Being & Becoming features some of the leading lights from the next generation of creative musicians – vibraphonist Joel Ross and bassist Nick Jozwiak – and is now joined by the tirelessly inventive drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey, a Pulitzer Prize winner whose collaborators include Vijay Iyer, Roscoe Mitchell, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran and Steve Lehman. Evans’ compositions for the band shift seamlessly between notated chamber music textures, free improvisations, deep grooves and telepathic ensemble playing.
