Ars Nova Workshop welcomes the “ecstatic minimalism” of Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society back to Philadelphia at Solar Myth, joined by legendary saxophonist Ari Brown and other very special guests for three nights, September 21-23.
“Aficionados of transcendental music often have to choose between spiritual jazz & minimalist drone for their perfect hit, but the records of Joshua Abrams and his Natural Information Society essentially unite the best of both worlds.” -Mojo
Since first developing Natural Information Society in 2010, multi-instrumentalist and composer Joshua Abrams has been gradually expanding the group’s conceptual underpinnings, its musical references, and the sheer number of the group’s members. Its music is, in a sense, an expansive form of minimalism, based in repeated & overlaid rhythmic patterns, ostinatos & modality. On the mesmerizing ensemble’s latest outing, Since Time Is Gravity, they are joined by the Chicago living legend Ari Brown, whose work bridges eras from bebop to the avant-garde in the tradition of departed masters like Fred Anderson and Von Freeman.
