Ars Nova Workshop presents the adventurous avant-punk power trio mssv at Solar Myth on Friday, April 4.

mssv, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges on drums and Mike Watt on bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” All three bring a history of stylistically dizzying experimentation to the collaboration. Watt, of course, was a co-founder of seminal post-punk icons the Minutemen, and went on to notable stints with fireHOSE and The Stooges among countless other collaborations. Baggetta, called “a guitarist of slippery proficiency” by The New York Times, has worked with a wide range of visionary musicians including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Henry Kaiser, and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, among others. One of the most original and stylized drummers of his generation, Hodges burst into the popular consciousness with his contributions to the Tom Waits classics Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs. In addition to performing and recording with Chuck Berry, John Hammond, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples, and The Smashing Pumpkins, Hodges was also handpicked by David Lynch for his Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me soundtrack.
