Kalia Vandever Quartet

January 19, 2023

Ars Nova Workshop presents an evening with trombonist and composer Kalia Vandever, an acclaimed rising star of contemporary jazz, in an ensemble performance at Solar Myth on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

Kalia Vandever

Kalia Vandever is an American trombonist and composer living in Brooklyn, NY. Her approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by her sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. Her debut ensemble album, In Bloom (2019), featuring original compositions written for quartet and duo with guitar, was aptly described as “the rise of an exciting voice for the music” (Seton Hawkins, Hot House Jazz). A sophomore outing on New Amsterdam Records, Regrowth (2022) more recently “confirms her strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view.” (Nate Chinen, WBGO)

Kalia received her Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School in 2017. She has toured and performed internationally with her quartet and as a side-woman, performing with artists including Moses Sumney, Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins, Maria Grand, Fay Victor, and others. She has also performed on Saturday Night Live with Demi Lovato and Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal with Lizzo.

Kalia is an awardee of the 2022 Next Jazz Legacy, a program founded by New Music USA and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
