Ars Nova Workshop presents veteran tuba player Joseph Daley, one of the pioneering voices of low brass in improvised music, with his Tuba Trio at Solar Myth on Thursday, September 28. They’ll be celebrating the 100th birthday of the great Sam Rivers.
After over 50 years of recognition as one of the consummate sidemen on the adventurous music scene – with remarkable artists like Carla Bley, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden, Muhal Richard Abrams, Taj Mahal and so many more – Joseph Daley has emerged as one of Jazz and contemporary music’s most extraordinary composers and leaders. His own Tuba Trio was formed in homage to the legendary Sam Rivers, in whose own Tuba Trio and other groups Daley came to prominence beginning on the 1970s NYC loft scene. Daley’s Tuba Trio features percussion master Warren Smith, also a member of the original Rivers incarnation, along with multi-reedist and -instrumentalist Scott Robinson. The trio aims for the transcendence and spiritual force that was at the core of Rivers’ music, wielding the passion, urgency, virtuosity, majesty, boldness and unfettered imagination that were the hallmarks of all of the late saxophonist’s music.
