Join us for a special cross-generational performance sparked by The Jazz Gallery’s Mentorship Program, as drum great and Philly hometown hero Johnathan Blake is joined by his mentee, Korean-born pianist Dabin Ryu, along with bassist Dezron Douglas.
Revered New York venue The Jazz Gallery developed its Mentorship Program to cultivate a group of senior-level jazz musicians as mentors and to provide aspiring musicians with the opportunity to learn the music and business of jazz under the guidance of their contemporary heroes. Ars Nova Workshop has partnered with The Jazz Gallery to bring that mentor-protegé relationship to the stage of Solar Myth, providing the type of invaluable bandstand experience that has kept the music moving forward throughout jazz history. Born in Philadelphia in 1976, Johnathan Blake is one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation. He has also proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician, collaborating with Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Tom Harrell, Hans Glawischnig, Avishai Cohen, Donny McCaslin, Linda May Han Oh, Jaleel Shaw, Chris Potter, Maria Schneider, Alex Sipiagin, Kris Davis and countless other distinctive voices. He is mentoring Dabin Ryu, a classically-trained pianist from Seoul, South Korea who studied at Berklee and Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Ralph Peterson, Joanne Brackeen, Kendrick Scott, Buster Williams, and others.
