Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present the long-awaited return of Fieldwork, the innovative trio of Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey and Steve Lehman, at Solar Myth.

As a collective of three widely celebrated composer-performers – Vijay Iyer  (piano), Steve Lehman (saxophone) and Tyshawn Sorey (drums) – Fieldwork’s music reflects each member’s ties to the American jazz tradition, modern composition, African and South Asian musics, underground hip-hop and electronica, and the influential music of Chicago’s AACM. Fieldwork’s intensely collaborative rehearsal process resembles that of a rock band: they use group improvisation to develop and expand their intricate compositions into something larger than the sum of its parts. The result is a dense yet visceral musical world: tightly unified ensemble playing, extroverted and high-impact, but with a mysterious inner logic. In the more than a decade since Fieldwork last played together in Philadelphia, all three members have ascended to the highest ranks of contemporary music across the stylistic spectrum, making this three-night reunion an occasion not to be missed.
