Caroline Davis’ Alula

June 28, 2023

Ars Nova Workshop presents Brooklyn-based saxophonist Caroline Davis and her adventurous trio Alula, at Solar Myth on Wednesday, June 28.

Mobile since her birth in Singapore, composer, saxophonist, and artivist Caroline Davis’s music covers a wide range of styles, owed to her shifting environment as a child. She has worked with Lee Konitz, Angelica Sanchez, The Femme Jam, Matt Mitchell, Terry Riley and Miles Okazaki, and won the Rising Star Alto Saxophone category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. Formed in Brooklyn in 2016, Alula was whole-heartedly motivated by the study of an anterior digit on a bird’s wing. The alula wing functions as a locomotive during flight and landing, and has specific rhythmic functions, which is of central concern on the trio’s self-titled debut album. The current incarnation of Alula will feature bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Kate Gentile.
