Adam O’Farrill’s Stranger Days

May 6, 2022

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present Stranger Days, the acclaimed, adventurous quartet led by trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, a third-generation member of one of jazz’s most innovative family trees. Join us for a live performance by Adam O’Farrill’s Stranger Days, at Philadelphia’s RUBA Club, on Friday, May 6, at 8:00PM.

Adam O’Farrill

Acclaimed as an “omnipresent, omnivorous young trumpeter” by David A. Graham in The Atlantic, Adam O’Farrill has performed and recorded with artists such as Rudresh Mahanthappa, Mary Halvorson, Vijay Iyer, Kambui Olujimi, Mulatu Astatke, Brasstracks, Stephan Crump, Onyx Collective, Anna Webber, and Samora Pinderhughes. O’Farrill and his brother, Stranger Days drummer Zack O’Farrill, come from a rich musical background: their grandfather is the Afro-Cuban-Irish composer and arranger Chico O’Farrill; their father the cultural boundary-pushing composer and pianist Arturo O’Farrill, and their mother Alison Deane a classical pianist and educator.

In 2019, Adam won the DownBeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Trumpet category. The category only scratches the surface of O’Farrill’s meteoric ascent, which has seen him collaborating with many of the most revered names in jazz and creative music while pursuing his own distinctive vision. The Wall Street Journal praised his music as “refined and discreet; it integrates aspects of art rock and contemporary classical music and boasts a cinematic influence.”

Visions Of Your Other

Visions Of Your Other (Biophilia), the third album by Adam O’Farrill’s Stranger Days, was recently hailed as “O’Farrill’s most melodically engaging effort yet” by The New York Times, which also named it one of the best albums of 2021. O’Farrill’s music is both abstract and personal, his compositions reflecting such diverse subjects as being mixed race, growing up in New York, family history, and spirituality, while drawing inspiration from film, literature, and folk traditions.

Visions Of Your Other takes the band back to its roots in original compositions after their Mexican folk music-inspired 2018 release El Maquech. The album takes its title from a scene in Paul Thomas Anderson’s post-WWII psychological portrait, The Master, and features a radically reimagined piece by Ryuichi Sakamoto along with O’Farrill’s original compositions.
