Ars Nova Workshop will bring the spirit of Philadelphia to NYC’s most celebrated jazz event with the Ars Nova Workshop Stage at Winter JazzFest, presenting a stellar all-star line-up for the festival’s 20th anniversary on Friday, January 12 at Nublu.
Over the past two decades, Winter Jazzfest has cemented a reputation as a hotbed of cultural discovery, presenting new and exciting sounds and scenes throughout New York. Ars Nova Workshop could make the identical claim for the Philly scene, making a collaboration between the two a natural fit. For this year’s festival, ANW will present six acts representing the innovative and wide-ranging music that it has presented over its own 20-plus year history. The evening will kick off with the explosive trio Bark Culture, and continue with bassist Anthony Tidd’s genre-fusing band Sanity featuring poet Ursula Rucker; the ever-shifting band Ghost Horizons led by 99 year-old Sun Ra Arkestra leader Marshall Allen; the ground-breaking poet, singer and songwriter Saul Williams; Black Buttafly, aka keyboardist/singer Kayla Childs and her soulful band; and Charlie Hall’s Get Up With It, the electrifying Miles Davis tribute ensemble led by the War on Drugs drummer.
