Angelo Outlaw

On the closing night of the 2024 Philly Music Fest, Ars Nova Workshop presents the mesmerizing, exploratory trio Glass Band, featuring guitarists Steve Gunn and Bill Nace with drummer John Truscinski, in addition to an opening set from Philly percussionist and poet Angelo Outlaw at Solar Myth on Sunday, October 27.

Lansdowne native Steve Gunn has won acclaim for both his contemporary guitar-driven material as well as his forward thinking songwriting, processing his inspirations into a singular, virtuosic stream that reveals the influence of blues, folk, ecstatic free jazz, and psych. He and drummer John Truscinski have released four transcendent albums as a duo, and paired with Body/Head, the duo of Bill Nace and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, for a soundtrack to Andy Warhol’s Kiss. Truscinski and the two guitarists furthered their ecstatic collaboration with the recent release of their first trio session. Aquarium Drunkard’s review credits the addition of Nace for, “anchoring this often incendiary guitar and percussion experiment in an endless serene now.”

Opening the night will be percussionist and poet Angelo Outlaw, a deeply cosmic artist whose creativity knows no bounds. A master mallet percussionist and a thoughtful poet, Outlaw’s unique style on vibraphone and marimba can only be described as dazzling. His work transcends race, creed, religion, and politics, and has the power to speak to the universality of time, space, and human connection.
