Tyshawn Sorey Trio

Tyshawn Sorey, drums
Gregg August, bass
Cory Smythe, piano

Ars Nova Workshop is proud to present the Tyshawn Sorey Trio.

Praised by the New York Times as one of “Five Drummers Whose Time is Now,” Tyshawn Sorey has played with artists like Vijay Iyer, Steve Colman, Steve Lehman and Myra Melford.  On Alloy (Pi 2014), his first recording as a leader since 2011, Sorey “takes the jazz piano tradition as exemplified by Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Andrew Hill… and extends the continuum to include compositional influences from classical music.” Though as a sideman Sorey is known for “his impossibly virtuosic technique, mixing rapid-fire playing with power and tumultuous eruptions,” his own compositions take a more pensive tone, infusing formal classical composition with space for improvisation.

The other members of the trio have long histories of performing Sorey’s compositions.  Pianist Cory Smythe, praised by the Washington Post for “the ferocity and finesse of his technique,” has worked with John Zorn, Peter Evans, Vijay Iyer, Steve Lehman, and Anthony Braxton, and has released his own solo album, Pluripotent. Bassist Tordini is best known for his work in Andy Milne’s Dapp Theory, the Claudia Quintet, and work with Greg Osby, Jeremy Belt, Ari Hoenig and Steve Lehman.

Alloy was released on Pi Recordings in October 2014.
