The Turbine! + Marshall Allen

Marshall Allen, alto saxophone + EVI
Harrison Bankhead, bass
Benjamin Duboc, bass
Hamid Drake, drums
Ramon Lopez, drums

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present The Turbine! with special guest Marshall Allen, touring in support of their 2014 RogueArt release, Entropy / Enthalpy.

The Turbine! features Harrison Bankhead (double bass), Hamid Drake (drums/percussion), Benjamin Duboc (double bass), and Ramon Lopez (drums/percussion). This double rhythm section is part of a lineage that begins with Ornette’s influential double quartet and extends to Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory. Turbine! members—evenly split between Chicago and Europe—regularly perform alongside avant-garde jazz luminaries (Pharoah Sanders, Oliver Lake) and less classifiable free improvisers (Jack Wright, Barry Guy).

Marshall Belford Allen (b. May 25, 1924) joined the Sun Ra Arkestra upon moving to Chicago in 1958. Allen, along with John Gilmore, June Tyson and James Jacson, lived, rehearsed, toured and recorded with Sun Ra for much of his career, leaving an indelible mark 0n the jazz avant-garde that continues to reverberate with present and future generations of improvisers.

Allen is featured on over 200 Sun Ra recordings, in addition to collaborations with Phish, Sonic Youth, Digable Planets, and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Allen assumed the position of maestro in 1995, following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995. Under Allen’s leadership, the Arkestra continues to research and develop Sun Ra's musical precepts. Allen works unceasingly to keep the big-band tradition alive, composing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra’s music, as well as new compositions for the Arkestra.
