Ars Nova Workshop and the Painted Bride Art Center are pleased to welcome the Steve Lehmen Octet.

Native New Yorker Steve Lehman has a stunning track record of critical acclaim and has received multiple awards for his talent and insight as a performer and a composer.  A graduate of Wesleyan University (where he studied under Anthony Braxton, Jay Hoggard, and Alvin Lucier), he has presented lectures at the Banff Centre, UC Berkley, the Berklee School of Music, and the Royal Academy of London, among others, and in 2011 he was an IRCAM research fellow in Paris. This year, he is a recipient of the prestigious Doris Duke Artist Award.

His octet is comprised of an all-star assemblage of performer-improvisers who represent the absolute vanguard on their respective instruments. The octet's debut recording Travail, Transformation & Flow (Pi, 2009), was called the #1 Jazz/Pop CD of 2009 by The New York Times and described as "a breathtaking accomplishment, a blast of urban futurism at once hypnotic, kinetic and kaleidoscopic. And funky." The Octet’s 2014 release, Mise en Abîme (Pi) was selected as #1 Jazz Album of the Year for 2014 in the NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll and #1 Jazz CD of 2014 by The LA Times. The album was also named one of the Top 10 Jazz CDs of 2014 in over 30 publications internationally, including Downbeat Magazine, The Guardian, Panorama Magazine (Italy), Magnet Magazine, The Village Voice, Jazz Times, and The BBC.
