Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the Philadelphia debut of the Renga Ensemble.

The brainchild of clarinetist and composer James Falzone, this ensemble takes both its name and its concept from a centuries-old form of collaborative Japanese poetry in which two or more poets produce a single meditative work.  Falzone’s vision is “designed to celebrate the clarinet’s breadth of sonic possibilities” (Chicago Music). To that end, he is joined by fellow Chicagoans Ken Vandermark, Keefe Jackson and Jason Stein, the Bay Area’s Ben Goldberg, and New York’s Ned Rothenberg.

MacArthur Fellow and jazz legend, Ken Vandermark leads many of his own ensembles in addition to past work with groups like the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet and Powerhouse Sound. Ben Goldberg, a former student of Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano, has worked with Zeena Parkins, Vijay Iyer, Myra Melford, and John Zorn, among others, and is the leader of several celebrated ensembles, including Tin Hat, the New Klezmer Trio, and the Ben Goldberg Quintet. Ned Rothenberg has collaborated with Evan Parker, Marc Ribot, Dave Douglas, Thomas Chapin, John Zorn, and many more. Jason Stein has performed with Michael Moore, Jeff Parker, Oscar Noriega, Rudi Mahall, and more. Keefe Jackson has worked with Anthony Coleman, Ab Baars, and Michael Moore, and regularly collaborates with Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Jeb Bishop, and other Chicago musicians.

The ensemble’s recording, The Room Is is due out on Falzone’s Allos Documents label in January 2015.
