Nate Wooley / C. Spencer Yeh / Ben Hall / Paul Lytton

Nate Wooley, trumpet + amplifier
C. Spencer Yeh, violin + electronics
Ben Lee, drums + percussion
Paul Lytton, drums + percussion

Ars Nova Workshop presents the first Philadelphia performance by this exciting new quartet featuring four artists who explore the tensions, commonalities, and new possibilities across the jazz, European improv, noise, and downtown continuums.  As Nate Wooley claims, the aim of this unique ensemble is "to see if a collision of forward thinking practitioners of each of these histories will create something greater than a well-thought out musical fusion."

* Drummer Ben Hall will be joining Wooley, Yeh, and Lytton tonight, as Okkyung Lee will be unexpectedly delayed in Europe. We apologize for the last minute line-up change. See a brief bio of Hall below.

Picking up the thread of transatlantic and transgenerational thinking that is forcefully demanding recognition in recent years with groupings like Peter Evans/Okkyung Lee/Evan Parker and the recent UK Free Noise tours, this new quartet is opening a new set of possibilities of improvised music that combines the traditions of jazz, contemporary classical music, early electronics and hard noise into something strange and new.  A combination of histories and languages, including the drone and fluxus aesthetics of violinist, electronicist and vocalist C. Spencer Yeh, the hardcore free jazz and improv walls of sound of cellist Okkyung Lee, and the closely considered fluctuations between new music, free jazz and harsh musique concrete of the trumpet and amplifier of Nate Wooley create a series of textures and counterpoints that concentrate on confounding the expectations of the listener and working toward a new, integrative approach to group improvisation.

Ben Hall is a drummer, percussionist, tympanist and a founding member of the 1/4 speed Michigan chamber jazz group Graveyards, as well as a co-curator of the experimental label brokenresearch.  Other groups include Mêlée with cellist Hans Buetow and trumpeter Nate Wooley, Trauma with guitarist Chris Riggs, The New Monuments with Don Dietrich of Borbetomagus and C. Spencer Yeh of Burning Star Core, a duo with violinist Mike Khoury, a duo with saxophonist Wally Shoup, a trio with Joe Morris and Chris Riggs, and a quartet with Vic Rawlings, Greg Kelley, and Chris Riggs.
