Matthew Shipp Duo

Matthew Shipp, piano
Michael Bisio, bass

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present this special duo performance of Matthew Shipp and Michael Bisio.

Matthew Shipp was born December 7, 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware. He started piano at five  years old, and fell in love with jazz at the age of twelve. After moving to New York in 1984 he quickly became one of the leading lights in the New York jazz scene, tenuring in the highly acclaimed David S. Ware Quartet and Roscoe Mitchell's Note Factory. As a leader, Shipp has garnered much attention for his trio, featuring at various times William Parker, Susie Ibarra, Joe Morris, Whit Dickey and Michael Bisio. “The pianist digs deep,” says the Village Voice, “often bringing a molten motion to his work– it's thick with ideas.” He has also worked with Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Darius Jones, Evan Parker, Ivo Perelman, and Spring Heel Jack. His latest record, The Gospel According To Matthew and Michael (Relative Pitch Records, 2015), featuring Michael Bisio and violist Mat Maneri, “focuses on multivalent communication between individuals to create a group language that is both singular and partial… [The] ensemble’s grammar draws from personal experience, spirit, and language” (Tiny Mix Tapes). Michael Bisio has been performing regularly with Shipp in his trio and in duo contexts since 2009. He has collaborated extensively with Joe McPhee and Ivo Perelman, and has performed or recorded with Wayne Horvitz, Vinny Golia, Charles Gayle, Louis Belogenis, Karl Berger, and more.
