Ken Vandermark’s Made to Break

Ken Vandermark, reeds
Christof Kurzmann, electronics
Jasper Stadhouders, bass
Tim Daisy, drums

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present Made to Break, saxophonist Ken Vandermark’s most recent and most unhinged offering in years.

Vandermark’s provocatively eclectic electro-acoustic quartet returns to Philadelphia for the first time since their unforgettable 2014 performance at the Barnes Foundation as part of Ars Nova’s city-ranging New Paths Festival. The legendary Chicago multi-reedist and MacArthur Fellow formed Made to Break in 2011, bringing together a longtime Chicago collaborator and a pair of European innovators. Of their fourth CD, Before the Code (Trost), Antonio Poscic of The Free Jazz Collective writes, “Made to Break proves to be, time and again, the vessel for [Vandermark’s] most creative outbursts and boldest ideas.”

The quartet’s overarching concept was to explore modular forms with multiple moving parts, infusing Cagean controlled-chance operations with rhythmic concepts that Vandermark previously explored within the funk- and soul-indebted Powerhouse Sound. Typically for the open-eared composer, Made to Break draws on influences as disparate as Ethiopian music, the new music devices of John Cage and Morton Feldman and the anarcho-jazz-punk mash-ups of his sometime compatriots in Dutch band The Ex with his usual history-spanning jazz concepts.

Percussionist Tim Daisy has been an active member of Chicago’s creative music community since 1997, where he leads the bands Vox Arcana, Steel Bridge Trio and Red Space and owns and operates Relay Records. Austrian-born, Buenos Aires-based multi-instrumentalist, laptop musician, and curator Christof Kurzmann explores electropop, free improvisation and new music in the groups The Magic I.D., El Infierno Musical, and Trio Carrasco/Kaplan/Kurzmann, and founded the Charhizma label which has released more than 30 CDs since 1999. Dutch bassist/guitarist Jasper Stadhouders is an active member of the international improvised music circuit with his bands Cactus Truck, the Stadhouders/Govaert/De Joode Trio and duos with percussionists Dag Erik Knedal Andersen and Nicolas Field.
