Jemeel Moondoc’s The Zookeeper’s House

Jemeel Moondoc, alto saxophone
Lafayette Gilchrist, piano
Hilliard Green, bass
Newman Taylor Baker, drums

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the legendary Jemeel Moondoc with his latest group, The Zookeeper’s House.

“Moondoc can evoke the bluesy openness of Ornette Coleman, the articulateness of Jimmy Lyons and the harsh tones of Albert Ayler. He can fire off pyrotechnics, but he doesn't just shriek and moan; he uses his technique to create long wordless narratives, shifting from a sprint into aching, ballad-like phrases or pressuring a bright melody until it cracks.” – Jon Pareles, New York Times

Legendary Loft Era saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc was inspired to pursue a musical life after hearing pianist Cecil Taylor, and he soon after began studying with Taylor at University of Wisconsin, Madison and Antioch College. He moved to New York City in 1972 and co-founded one of the most innovative Loft Era groups, Ensemble Muntu, whose various configurations included Arthur Williams, William Parker, Mark Hennen, Rashid Sinon, Rashid Bakr and Roy Campbell. Moondoc has been active ever since, and in recent years he has worked with Hamid Drake, John Voight and frequently with long time collaborator William Parker. The Zookeeper’s House (Relative Pitch, 2014), described by the Free Jazz Collective as “a post-modern free jazz musical exploration that continually builds upon its American free jazz and hard bop roots,” is Moondoc’s first release since the modern classic, Revolt of the Negro Lawn Jockeys (Eremite Records, 2001). This performance features Lafayette Gilchrist, Hilliard Green, and Newman Taylor Baker. Together, this impressive roster of veteran musicians has collaborated with David S. Ware, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Uri Caine, Billy Bang, Henry Grimes, Bobby Zankel, Monette Sudler, Henry Threadgill, and many more.
