Ars Nova Workshop is privileged to present Japanese noise veterans Hijokaidan in a rare Philadelphia appearance.

Hijokaidan (“emergency staircase”) emerged in the late 70s as “the most heinous band from the Kansai punk scene,” according to Masami Akita a.k.a. Merzbow. Under the leadership of guitarist and self-proclaimed “king of noise” JoJo Hiroshige, Hijokaidan began as a nihilistic performance art project involving the wanton destruction of venue property, flung garbage, and public urination—a precursor to Hanatarash’s bulldozer concert.

Perhaps growing bored with its scandalous reputation, Hijokaidan focused on integrating the physicality of its live show into a complete embodiment of abstract sound, devoid of any remotely “musical” devices. For over 30 years, Hijokaidan has remained devoted to subtly refining an unrelenting sonic assault renowned by WFMU for its ability to “bludgeon [an] audience into a masochistic submission.” The collective has collaborated with a wide array of musicians, including free jazz saxophonist Akira Sakata, Spanish industrial duo Esplendor Geometrico, and kindred American spirits Borbetomagus.

Hijokaidan are touring in support of 2015’s LP Emergency Stairway to Heaven on UK label Cold Spring.
