Dave Douglas + Uri Caine Duo

Summer Season

Dave Douglas, trumpet
Uri Caine, piano

Ars Nova Workshop is proud to present Uri Caine and Dave Douglas.  Caine, a Philadelphia native and Grammy nominee, has made a career of exploring and combining the worlds of chamber music and jazz.  His ensembles have performed his arrangements of the works of classical composers such as Wagner, Beethoven and Bach, and he has performed with chamber orchestras all over the world, but he’s also established his standing as a significant figure in modern jazz, having worked in ensembles with Don Byron, John Zorn, Barry Altschul, and many others.  Most recently, Caine released a solo CD, "Callithump" (Winter and Winter).

Dave Douglas is recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award and two Grammy nominations.  He spent ten years directing the Jazz and Creative Music Program at the Banff Center, has directed the Festival of New Trumpet Music since its inception in 2003, and runs the independent record label Greenleaf Music.  Douglas began performing with John Zorn’s Masada quartet in 1993, and since then has led multiple ensembles of his own. He has performed with artists as varied as Anthony Braxton, Erik Friedlander, and Sean Lennon, among others, and his collaborations have involved film, modern dance, and spoken word.

The duo are currently touring in support of their upcoming release, “Present Joys,” an exploration of the Sacred Harp tradition.  The record includes both existing works from shape-note tunebooks and new original compositions and is due for release on July 22 on Greenleaf Music.
