“Once in a while something gets slapped in the tape deck that just utterly, completely nails you to the underpinnings of heavens dripping maw,” wrote Byron Coley and Thurston Moore about Ashley Paul's 2010 cassette, if only goodnight, which earned the top spot on their “Tongue Top Ten” for Arthur Magazine.

Ars Nova Workshop presents the Philadelphia debut of heavy-hitting power-trio Ballister, and a rare solo performance by Norwegian noise artist Lasse Marhaug.

“They use their instruments like artillery, launching a barrage of explosive free improvisation,” the Chicago Reader correctly observes about Ballister's debut LP, Bastard String. “Though individual players occasionally drop out and the group sometimes turns down the heat, giving the performances dynamic range, the music is never polite.”

“They play fast, looping, dynamically even and entwining lines, laying bebop over clanky grooves,” The New York Times writes about Endangered Blood, a new quartet featuring saxophonists Chris Speed and Oscar Noriega, bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Jim Black. The band's hard-hitting self-titled debut was released last year on Speed's Skirl label and features original pieces by Speed as well as reworkings of classic tunes, like Thelonious Monk's “Epistrophy.”

Please join Ars Nova Workshop for a special performance by Steve Coleman and Five Elements.

"Steve Coleman comes up with some of the most original song structures in jazz," writes NPR. "In many others' hands, they'd sound like algebra; with his virtuosity and arranging, it crackles with excitement."
