Andrew Lamb Trio

Andrew Lamb, saxophone + flute
Larry Roland, bass
Warren Smith, drums + percussion

Ars Nova is pleased to present a rare Philadelphia performance from multi-reedist Andrew Lamb (b. 1958).

Born 1958 in Clinton, NC and raised between Chicago and Queens, NY, Lamb studied with AACM’s Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre in the 70s before carving out a niche among Bed-Stuy improvisers in the 80s.

Lamb made his studio debut on Portrait in the Mist, released in 1994 on Delmark. Portrait showcased Lamb’s searing tenor playing, capable of unsentimental tenderness and controlled volatility. “The psalm-like expression of [Lamb’s] tenor saxophone…reflects his quest,” writes Steve Loewy of Allmusic, “testifying to his musical abilities, enormous potential, and depth of character.”

In the ensuing years, Lamb played in Henry Grimes’ Sublime Communication trio and Cecil Taylor’s big band but has remained focused on his own projects, releasing The Pilgrimage on CIMP in 2003, The Dogon Duo (with percussionist Warren Smith) in 2005, and the New Orleans Suite in 2006, both on Engine.

Lamb’s trio is rounded out by bassist and tubist Tom Abbs, a member of collectives Triptych Myth, Yuganaut, and Transmitting (with Napoleon Maddox and Jane LeCroy); and percussionist Warren Smith, co-founder of Max Roach’s M’Boom jazz percussion ensemble and associate of Sam Rivers and the late David S. Ware.
